The government says it wants to eventually replace short-haul aviation with a high speed rail service. About time. Why has it taken so long to make this announcement? Having scores of fuel-guzzling jets zipping up and down this tiny isle of ours is a bit absurd. London to New York, yes, but London to Manchester, no. A good rail service would also result in fewer car journeys, surely. And that’s not to mention rail freight, which is still under exploited.
Another of my favourites…
I am a British-Canadian journalist who has worked for two UK weeklies, a PR agency and an exporting organisation. I enjoy playing the guitar and spending quality time with my two wonderful little boys. I have lots of favourite bands and solo artists, among them Dr John, The Beatles, Sam Cooke, Terry Callier, Rush, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Maiden, Sabbath and Priest (I’m still a defender of the faith.)
Book-wise, I cut my teeth on Tom Sharpe and James Herriot before moving on to the likes of Orwell, DH Lawrence, Le Carré, Waugh, Amis (Kingsley), Eco, Updike, Munro (Alice) and Steinbeck.
I have also become familiar with the works of several classic Latin American authors. I mostly read short stories. For several years I worked in Latin America not only as a journalist but also as a part-time teacher.
Among my favourite films of all time are La Vita e Bella, Easy Rider and Star Wars.
My favourite type of food is Indian and my favourite beer is Mann’s Brown followed by Timothy Taylor Landlord and Corona (if it’s hot).
